Parchem – fine & specialty chemicals is a leading supplier of Camphor Oil. Camphor is a terpenoid that is a white waxy solid with a strong aromatic odor. Camphor is often botanically referred to as Cinnamomum camphora and is known in India as kapoor. Camphor oil also goes by the IUPAC name 1,7,7-Trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one. It can be isolated as one of its two isomers [CAS: 464-49-3 (R), CAS: 464-48-2 (S)], but is often supplied as a racemic mixture of both [CAS: 76-22-2].
Camphor Oil is produced synthetically by isolating it from turpentine oils such as alpha-pinene, but it can be prepared through distillation of the branches and trunks of the Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora) and also Dryobalanops aromatic, which are large evergreen trees found in Asia. Camphor oil is derived from alpha-pinene through a Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement by the use of Acetic acid as a solvent. Once rearranged to the isobornyl cation, acetate is added to yield isobornyl acetate. Further hydrolysis of Isobornyl Acetate into isoborneol followed by oxidation yields a racemic mixture of the camphor isomers.
Camphor Oil has a wide range of applications, and some of Camphor Oil’s main uses include flavor and fragrance, embalming fluids, pharmaceuticals, foods, and aromatherapy. For example, in India it is used as an ingredient in cooking.
