Diethyl MalonateParchem – fine and specialty chemicals is a leading supplier of diethyl malonate [CAS 105-53-3]Organic chemical intermediates such as diethyl malonate play a vital role in today’s chemical industry as they are useful building blocks for downstream intermediates and derivatives in a variety of applications.  Diethyl malonate is often found naturally in common fruits such as strawberries and grapes; its distinctly sweet and apple-like odor makes it useful in a variety of perfumes and fragrances. However, it is much more common to synthetically produce diethyl malonate from its precursor malonic acid, a dicarboxylic acid that is also widely used as an organic intermediate for synthesis.

Diethyl malonate, also known as DEM or ethyl propanedioate, is produced by combining malonic acid with ethanol to promote ester formation.  An alternate process involves using cobalt catalysts to drive a reaction between chloroacetates and carbon monoxide in the presence of alcohol.  Synthetic diethyl malonate can be used as a precursor to a number of flavor and fragrance products, but it is also very important to the personal care, pharmaceutical, and nutritional industries.

Diethyl malonate is a chemical intermediate that can be used as a building block for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and vitamins such as Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B6.  In the pharmaceutical marketplace, diethyl malonate is a useful building block in the production of barbiturates.  Barbiturates prepared using diethyl malonate are very useful in medicine as they are used to induce sedative and anesthetic effects in patients.
