2-MercaptobenzothiazoleParchem – fine and specialty chemicals is a leading provider of vulcanization accelerators such as 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole. 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole [CAS: 149-30-4] is an organic gray/white to light yellow powder with a slightly foul odor and a bitter taste that is a member of the Benzothiazole chemical family.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is used primarily as a vulcanization accelerator in the production of natural and synthetic rubbers such as latex; it is considered in the rubber industry to be a hemi-ultra accelerator. A high number of downstream vulcanization accelerators for rubber are based upon 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole. Combining of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole with other accelerators often allows for low-temperature curing. 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is also used in water treatment, lubricants, and petroleum products as a corrosion inhibitor by inhibiting the formation of organic layers on metal surfaces.

Other applications of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole include using it as a free radical polymerization inhibitor, as a chain transfer agent, as a reforming agent, and as an assisting agent of photo-polymerization initiators for resins. 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is also used as a reactant for various pharmaceuticals and pesticides. In particular, 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is an active ingredient in Sulfodene medications for dogs. Sulfodene is one of the oldest approved dog medications on the market today, being approved by the FDA in 1943.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is also referred to by other names such as 2-MBT for short, Benzothiazole-2-thiol, 2(3H)-Benzothiazolethione, 2-Benzothiazolethiol, 2-Benzothiazolyl mercaptan, and its IUPAC name 1,3-benzothiazole-2-thiol. 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is easily soluble in Acetone, Ethyl Acetone, Ethyl Alcohol, or dilute solutions of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. However, 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is insoluble in water, gasoline, and only slightly soluble in benzene. 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is produced by initiating an addition reaction using aniline, carbon disulfide, and sulfur.
