Pelargonic acid [ CAS# 112-05-0 ], commonly known as nonanoic acid, is an organic compound and a fatty acid occurring naturally as esters in pelargonium oil. While it is insoluble in water, it is miscible in chloroform, ether, and hexane. Pelargonic acid is commonly used to prepare plasticizers. Additionally, it is a very useful material when used in certain resins, as it can help to prevent discoloration and preserve flexibility. It can also be used in lubricants and metal working fluids, personal care products, and transdermal drug delivery systems.

In certain forms, such as the ammonium salt form of nonanoic acid, it can function as an herbicide by helping to remove the waxy cuticle from plants. Pelargonic acid is also an environmentally and human friendly substance when used responsibly. Growers use pelargonic acid as a blossom thinner, allowing blossoms to produce higher quality yields. Further, this allows the trees to produce fruit each year as opposed to every other year.

Parchem – fine & specialty chemicals has long been a reliable presence in the specialty chemicals industry. We know it is important to keep up with chemical trends in order to provide our customers with the products they need, whenever and wherever they need them.
