Isopropyl alcohol [CAS: 67-63-0] is the simplest secondary alcohol.  It is a colorless, flammable chemical intermediate and solvent with a strong characteristic odor. Isopropyl alcohol is referred to by a number of names such as propan-2-ol, 2-propanol, isopropanol, rubbing alcohol (as a ~70% blend with water), sec-propyl alcohol, s-propanol, and IPA. Isopropyl alcohol is miscible in a wide range of liquids such as chloroform, ether, other alcohols, and water. Isopropyl alcohol is used as a solvent for various chemicals such as ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, certain oils & gums, alkaloids, and some natural resins. There are two ways in which Isopropyl Alcohol is produced: in a hydration reaction of propene and water, and through the hydrogenation of acetone.

Isopropyl alcohol is used in a wide range of industries and applications. Isopropyl alcohol is most commonly used as a solvent for a wide range of non-polar compounds. Isopropyl alcohol is also a common component of cleaning products for its solvent properties and quick evaporation rate. In particular, isopropyl alcohol is used as a solvent during the manufacture of various coatings and in industrial applications. Isopropyl alcohol is also used more directly in medical sanitation applications in a 60-70% solution (in water) for disinfectant pads and a 75% solution (in water) for hand sanitizers.

Isopropyl alcohol is a common ingredient in the production processes of various pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and household products. Additionally, Isopropyl alcohol has been used as a preservative for certain biological specimens. Other common applications of isopropyl alcohol include gasoline additive and as a chemical feedstock for a number of other downstream chemical intermediates.
