Exciting times are ahead as Parchem gears up for Halloween weekend and our annual, company potluck lunch on Monday! As candy is sure to be a common theme in all celebrations this weekend, we thought it would be a great time to take a closer look at Carnauba Wax!
Carnauba Wax [CAS# 8015-86-9] is a wax that is procured from Carnauba palm leaves which originate from Brazil. The wax is collected by drying the palm leaves, then beating them to loosen the wax. The wax is then refined and bleached to obtain the usable form of Carnauba Wax. It can be used as a powder or solid wax in various grades.
Carnauba Wax is primarily composed of fatty acid esters and fatty alcohols. It is widely used in polishes to help add a glossy finish to products. It also functions as a mold release agent and a waterproofing agent. On its own, carnauba wax is rather fragile and for this reason it is often used in combination with other waxes such as beeswax.
As the wax aids in giving products a high-gloss finish, it is commonly used to produce shoe polishes, furniture waxes, paper coating, and -appropriately for Halloween- candy coating and cosmetics!
So when celebrating Halloween this year, applying makeup for exciting costumes, or enjoying delicious Halloween candies, you now know that Carnauba Wax may be a key ingredient in all of these!
