Parchem - Fine and Specialty Chemicals, a global raw materials supplier, recently donated personal care ingredients and a Dell laptop to the New Rochelle High School (NRHS) science department’s chairperson and long time teacher, Joyce Kent. Ms. Kent expressed her gratitude for the generous donation.

CEO of Parchem, Ephraim Rabin, is a long time resident and graduate of NRHS. In 2008, Mr. Rabin moved Parchem’s corporate office to New Rochelle with intentions of creating jobs and contributing to the community. Parchem is honored to support science within NRHS and reach out to the community.

NRHS has an extremely large science department in which many students rely on for learning, experimenting, and extracurricular activity. The donated ingredients will be offered to all of NRHS’s chemistry classes in which the AP chemistry class will use them to make cosmetics.

Ms. Kent explained that there are many different science courses in the high school ranging anywhere from your core sciences such as living environment (biology), chemistry and earth science to more particularly unique courses such as food science and astronomy-physics. In addition, there are many science clubs in New Rochelle High School, such as The Green Club, Science Honor Society, and Science Olympiads who won their third championship in four years at the Lower Hudson Valley Regional Science Olympiad tournament last year.

They are all good kids,” says Kent. She appreciates her students and wants the best for all of them. She has been teaching science since 1964 when she began in New York City then started at New Rochelle High School in 1979. It was eight years ago that the high school rightfully named her chairperson of the science department. Aside from her obligation to evaluate and observe teachers, she also has an obligation to keep the staff and students together much like a family. “I consider myself a support system and peacemaker for the staff and students of the school,” she states.

Like Joyce Kent, Parchem is committed to promoting science within the community and would like to continue reaching out. Parchem is pleased to provide the students with necessary resources for science and looks forward to making a difference in the community.
