2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate [CAS: 868-77-9] is a hydrophilic acrylate that Parchem supplies as stabilized monomer with Hydroquinone Monomethyl Ether (MEHQ).  It is produced industrially as a downstream derivative of methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol through an esterification process.  2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate is most commonly used in the production of polymers and polymer-based materials such as specialty coatings, resins, and acrylic plastics.  2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate is used as a chemical intermediate in these production processes in combination with other reagents used to drive polymerization.

2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate is one of the most widely studied and used monomers today.  One of the main uses for 2-hydroxethyl methacrylate is as a chemical intermediate and building block in the manufacture of derivative acrylate polymers such as polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate. Polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate is a bi-functional acrylate polymer commonly used in flexible plastics such as contact lenses.  This polymer is used in certain contact lenses because it is rigid and easy to shape with grinding tools when it is dry, but when it is introduced to water it becomes flexible by absorbing the water directly into its structure.

2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate is commonly used in general industrial coatings, adhesives, printing inks, and plastics. 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate is used in applications such as cross-linking, hydrophilicitry, and adhesion.
