Methyl ethyl ketone [CAS: 78-93-3] is an organic chemical solvent that is used in several industrial manufacturing processes. Methyl Ethyl Ketone, also called MEK, is a clear liquid that has a number of applications as a solvent for the production of coatings, resins, printing inks, lubricants and more.  Methyl ethyl ketone is also referred to by its IUPAC name Butan-2-one, 2-Butanone, Methylpropanone, Ethylmethylketone, and Methylacetone. 

Methyl ethyl ketone can be produced in a variety of ways.  The most common method of producing MEK is through the catalyzed oxidation of the alcohol 2-Butanol. Common catalysts for this oxidation reaction are often copper or zinc-based compounds. Methyl ethyl ketone can also be produced through the oxidation of heavy naphtha, where 2-Butanone is extracted as a product catalytic cracking and fractionation. Methyl ethyl ketone is also found sparingly in natural sources such as dairy foods and certain agricultural products.
