Toluene [ CAS# 108-88-3 ], also known as methylbenzene, is an aromatic, organic compound that is used worldwide as an important, organic solvent. It is widely used in laboratories because of its ability to dissolve a number of notable non-polar, covalent substances including sulfur, iodine, bromine, phosphorus, and other inorganic compounds. It is also extensively used as a starting material for the manufacture of a large variety of industrial chemicals. Additionally, it is used in the synthesis of benzoic acid, saccharin, dyes, photographic chemicals, and many industrial and pharmaceutical compounds. Most recently developed applications for toluene include the production of many plastics and polymers, the manufacture of nylon and as an additive to gasoline intended to aid in the reduction of engine-knocking.
