Maleic anhydride is a useful chemical intermediate in in organic synthesis.  It is often used to make downstream derivatives for plastics, adhesives and coatings.  Its hydrolyzed form is maleic acid.

Maleic anhydride is also a dispersant; it compounds with sulfurous additives and acts as a dispersant in drilling mud.
