Methacrylic acid[CAS: 79-41-4] is often referred to by its IUPAC name 2-Methylpropenoic acid, by 2-methyl-2-propenoic acid or MAA for short.  Additionally, Methacrylic is a colorless, viscous carboxylic acid with an unpleasant odor that is soluble in warm water and is miscible with generally most organic solvents.

Methacrylic acid can be produced via three different pathways. The first pathway in which Methacrylic acid can be produced is when Acetone cyanohydrin is converted to Methacrylamide sulfate using sulfuric acid, is then hydrolyzed to Methacrylic acid or can be converted to methyl methacrylate in one step. Secondly, Methacrylic acid can be produced  via Isobutylene or tert-butanol. Isobutylene or tert-Butanol is oxidized to Methacrolein and oxidized again into Methacrylic acid. Methacrolein is generally produced via formaldehyde and ethylene.  Lastly, Methacrylic acid can be produced from the dehydrogenation of Isobutyric acid to Methacrylic acid. Naturally, Methacrylic acid also occurs in small amounts in the oil of Roman Chamomile

Methacrylic acid has a wide range of uses but the most common usage is for the manufacturing of acrylic resins and plastics such as the polymer Poly(Methacrylic acid). This occurs when Methacrylic acid is used to produce it’s ester, Methyl Methacrylate which in turn is used to produce Poly(Methyl Methacrylate). Methacrylic acid is also used in copolymer applications in combination with other acrylates. Applications of these copolymers include coatings, adhesives, personal care and cosmetic applications.
