This chemical has applications as a disinfectant, antiseptic, fungicide and preservative. For example, it is used to make carbolic soap, which functions as a cleaning agent, detergent, limited-use deodorant, and insect and deer repellent. 

Cresylic acid appears as an amber-red liquid with a medicinal odor, congealing at 32-35 degrees Celsius into a crystalline solid. Cresylic acid is a known irritant and toxic in high concentrations, requiring strict adherence to safety standards in packaging and transport.
