Calcium Carbonate [CAS#: 471-34-1] is an inorganic chemical compound that is extracted from limestone, marble, and other mineral rock formations. Calcium oxide is produced by heating calcium carbonate to extreme temperatures over 800°C in a process called calcination. Heating the calcium carbonate this way releases carbon dioxide from the molecule, leaving behind calcium oxide as a product of the reaction.
Conversely, calcium carbonate is also prepared using calcium oxide as a starting material. In this process, water is added to calcium oxide which drives a hydrolysis reaction that forms calcium hydroxide. Once the calcium hydroxide solution is formed, carbon dioxide is passed through the solution in order to precipitate out calcium carbonate granules.
Calcium Carbonate is used in several applications in the industrial, concrete, and oil markets. Highly purified forms of calcium carbonate are also used in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical markets. In the oil drilling industry, calcium carbonate is sometimes added to drilling muds and completion fluids to increase the density of the fluids. In industrial, concrete, and building applications, calcium carbonate is used as a chemical building block for the preparation of building materials.
