Most commonly, 1,3-Butylene Glycol [ CAS # 107-88-0 ], also known as 1,3-Butanediol, is used for the production of cosmetic products. Like other humectants, 1,3-Butylene Glycol helps forms a barrier that prevents cosmetic products from losing their moisture and drying out. Additionally, is helps to prevent the crystallization of insoluble components within cosmetics, making it a highly sought after compounds for these kinds of applications.  1,3 Butylene Glycol is also one of the most efficient antimicrobial agents when compared to other polyols and similar organic compounds, such as Glycerol, Sorbitol, and Propylene Glycol. It aids in the removal and inhibition of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, as well as molds and yeasts.

In terms of organic applications, 1,3-Butylene Glycol is a polar, organic solvent with a relatively high boiling point. In general, it is used as an alternative whenever Propylene Glycol or Glycerol is used for similar applications. It can also be used as a chemical intermediate for organic synthesis processes, such as the manufacture of polyurethane and polyester resins.
