Benzocaine is used in a variety of pharmaceutical products including prescription cough drops, topical creams, lip balms, and ear drops. Additionally, Benzocaine is also used as an intermediate and a precursor in the production of other downstream pharmaceutical products. Due to Benzocaine's properties as an ethyl ester of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) it is often prepared from a reaction between PABA and ethanol.
