Sodium Hydroxide [CAS# 1310-73-2], also known as Sodium Oxidanide, Caustic Soda, or Lye, is a hygroscopic and deliquescent compound that has a vast number of applications in many different industries including food processing, oil drilling, and the manufacture of many household and industrial products. Like most other ionic compounds, it is very soluble in water. In solution, sodium hydroxide is used in a number of laboratory applications including pH regulation, acid neutralization, titrations, organic synthesis, and the preparation of certain other chemical reagents. In industrial applications, caustic soda is used in pulp and paper manufacturing, soap and detergent manufacturing, and as a buffer for water treatment applications.
