Pelargonic acid [CAS: 112-05-0], also known as Nonanoic acid, is a naturally occurring fatty acid with a 9-carbon chain that is found in both vegetable and animal fats. Pelargonic acid is one of many straight-chain fatty acids that are found in natural fats; when it is extracted as a raw material, Pelargonic acid is used for a number of applications in the food & beverage, personal care, and industrial chemical marketplace.
Pelargonic acid is supplied by Parchem as a colorless to yellow liquid with a slight odor. As a medium-chain fatty acid, it is sometimes used as a surfactant/emollient in cosmetics and personal care products. Pelargonic acid is also used as a chemical intermediate for the production of downstream derivatives used to make plastics, lacquers, and coatings. Pelargonic acid is sometimes referred to as 1-octanecarboxylic acid, nonylic acid, pelargic acid, and nonanoate. Pelargonic acid is almost insoluble in water, but is completely soluble in certain non-polar solvents including chloroform, ether, and hexane.
Pelargonic acid is used in the chemical industry to form synthetic esters called nonanoates. These esters are formed with alcohols and are used in production of certain flavorings, such as methyl nonanoate. Pelargonic acid is also used in the modification of alkyd resins. Derivatives of pelargonic acid are sometimes used to produce agricultural chemicals, flavor and fragrance intermediates, plasticizers, coatings, and industrial chemicals.
