Glycerin is also known as Glycerine, Glycerol, Propanetriol, E422, or by its IUPAC name propane-1,2,3-triol. Glycerin is an ideal solvent due to its low toxicity, hydroscopic nature, solubility in water, and sweet taste. Glycerin is produced by hydrolysis or trans-esterification triglycerides found in the fats and oils of animals and plants. It is also generated as a by-product of biodiesel production. Synthetic glycerin can also be produced through certain methods using propylene as a starting material.
